It's saying they've gone private. Any idea why?

This is what happens when a large group of freeloading nerds start believing their own hype. Hope the dedicated, hardworking and honorable CEO stands firm.

Good riddance. You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villany than Reddit.

Twitter is definitely worse. Instagram can be a cesspit too if your algorithm decides it's going to show you sh*tty stuff.

I follow about 20 or so different subs on reddit, and they're all mostly good. I immediately unfollow anything that's remotely toxic, edgy or antagonistic as I just can't be doing with that sort of thing, but I generally don't really see that on anything I follow.

There's definitely some awful stuff on there, since it's basically a megaforum for absolutely anything, but I find it very easily avoidable.

They need to go dark indefinitely. Proper scummy behaviour by Reddit to kill off third party apps, then lie about being blackmailed by the creator of one of them. Been on Reddit for 13 years and will delete my account at the end of the month because of this.

And this is one of the benefits of third party apps. I have a ton of filters and blocks via Apollo to shut out anything I don’t want to see, it massively improves the user experience and you can tailor it to your own needs. It’s all gone on July 1st.

Twitter should be the first. The amount of arbitrary United "fan" accounts that pop in my timeline is ridiculous. The fact that all of them support Qatar and have the same argument ("Where were the journalists during City or Newcastle?") makes me want to puke.

Is it really though? Third party apps charge money or even subscription fees and block Reddit ads. Nobody wants to see ads but from Reddit's perspective it is understandable it's not a good deal for them, especially considering they're not very profitable. I agree that API fees seem very high but I don't really pretend to know how much they're losing in potential advertising. Probably still a lot.

I use a 3rd party app but don't really care. It's a site to waste time, it's not that serious.

Interestingly caf did find itself in similar circ*mstances about a decade ago when access to third party app Tapatalk was revoked.

Yes, the rates are extortionate. Nobody says API access has to be free, both app developers and users were willing to pay reasonable rates. The price was set to kill the apps off. The Apollo dev has gone to great lengths to explain everything and the more you read the worse it looks on Reddit. They said he tried to blackmail them for $10m, little did they know he recorded the phone call which proves he did not. They said his app was inefficient, so he published the source code proving it’s highly efficient and makes the most minimal API calls possible to function. Reddit has acted in extremely bad faith. I was reluctantly accepting of the change until all this, it’s disrespectful of the communities that Reddit is built on. It’s nothing without the users.

Reddit may not be profitable yet but revenues are high. There’s no reason why they couldn’t have worked with third party apps to come to an agreement. Apollo dev even said he’d be willing to support ads, and polls suggested users would pay Reddit for an ad-free experience (myself included).

The real situation is that the official app tracks a lot more of your data, such your location and other data from your phone that Reddit doesn’t really actually need, whereas third party apps are far more respectful. Wonder why they need all that data, and what they’re doing with? Hmm. This also affects mods, who use API support tools to better manage their communities. Their job becomes much harder and ultimately it will negatively affect the quality of the site as a whole. Frankly, I will not accept that they have to kill off these high quality third party apps, and that a compromise couldn’t be reached. I don’t buy that excuse, especially when they’ve bullsh*tted so much to justify it.

r/soccer's given up

r/reddevils has a poll running and looks like keeping it open will win, and someone in the comments think the caf hasn't been updated since 2006

WanderingEnigma
RedCafe is good, but it hasn't been updated since I first used it in about 2006. It's an old-school forum style that doesn't fill my wants.

For reference, this is what the caf was like in 2006

Tbf the latest caf design isn't that dissimilar to the old one. Plus the smilies are ancient and the stance on emojis belongs in the dinosaur era.
