Q. If my MC authority is not active may I still get a temporary KY permit?

A. No, all federal level credentials must be active before applying for temporary or permanent Kentucky credentials or permits.

Q. If my UCR is not active may I still get a temporary KY permit?

A. We like for all state and federal level credentials to be active before applying for temporary or permanent Kentucky credentials or permits.

Q. Will I be able to apply for a Kentucky temporary permit if I just received my USDOT and/or MC authority?

A. Only if the USDOT and/or MC authority has loaded into the system. This generally takes 24-48 hours.

A. KRS138.660 (3), any carrier with a vehicle that is over 59,999 lbs traveling in Kentucky is subject to the KYU tax. In lieu of the KYU tax we offer a 10 day vehicle specific KYU permit that costs $40.00.

Q. What is an International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) temporary permit?

A. Carriers with vehicles over 26,001 lbs or with 3 or more axles are subject to IFTA. Kentucky offers a temporary IFTA for 10 days, is vehicle specific, good for Kentucky only, and costs $40.00.

Q. What is a Kentucky Intrastate Tax (KIT Fuel) temporary permit?

A. Carriers that are classified as intrastate Kentucky based carriers with vehicles over 26,001 lbs or with 3 or more axles are subject to the KIT fuel tax. Kentucky offers a 10 day vehicle specific temporary that costs $40.00.

Q. What is a Non-Reciprocal (IRP) temporary permit?

A. Carriers that are not apportioned through the International Registration Plan (IRP) from their base state are required to purchase a temporary non-reciprocal permit (IRP). There are two permits based on registered weight. If the registered weight is <=55,000 lbs the charge is $25.00. If the registered weight is >55,000 lbs the charge is $40.00.

Q. Can permits be combined?

A. Yes; as long as the registered weight and the operation classification allow. For example you may purchase a KYU, IFTA, and IRP >55,001. You would not be able to purchase an IFTA and KIT on the same combo since IFTA is for interstate carriers and KIT is for intrastate carriers.

Q. How do I pay for my temporary Kentucky Permit?

A. The system is designed to accept all major credit cards only.

Q. Is there a processing fee?

A. Yes there is a 4% credit card processing fee on all purchase.

Q. Are the permits good in other states?

A. No, they are only good in Kentucky.

Q. Will this temporary permit cover my entire fleet?

A. No, the permits are vehicle specific. You would need a permit for each VIN.

Q. I am farm plated and haul my own products; do I need a KY temporary permit?

A. No farm plated vehicles that haul their own products are exempt from KYU, IFTA, and IRP.

Q. If my existing credentials KYU, IFTA, or KIT are inactive may I purchase a temporary Kentucky Permit?

A. The system will let you know what steps to take should you have inactive state or federal credentials.

Q. Are service providers or wire services allowed to purchase permits for their customers?

A. Yes, as long as you have Power of Attorney and permission to purchase permits on behalf of the customer. You will need all the truck's information, the type of permit needed, and a credit card for the charges.

Q. As a service provider we had a three digit code and ACH debit information on file. What information do I need to purchase Kentucky temporary permits and how will I be charged?

A. The three digit codes are going away in regards to ordering Kentucky temporary credential’s permits.

Q. I am leasing onto another carrier may I purchase a temporary Kentucky Permit?

A. The USDOT responsible for safety must be the USDOT on the permit. As the lessee you may use your own credit card to purchase the permit.

Q. If my permanent Kentucky credential is inactive by carrier request will I be able to purchase a temporary permit?

A. Yes, you may purchase as many temporary permits as you like. After you purchase 4 temporary permits in one calendar year you may request to have your permanent credential reinstated. To reinstate contact the Tax Branch at 502-564-1257.
