This casserole dish is one of my favorite instant pot recipes. This sweet potato recipe is extremely simple and has a short cook time for the sweet potatoes. When it comes to easy recipes, I do not think of traditional sweet potato casseroles. Even though it’s very similar to this recipe, the best way to make the classic sweet potato casserole is to use the instant pot. You will thank me later when you taste the instant pot mashed sweet potatoes. And of course on top of the sweet potato casserole will be the pecan streusel which is the best part in my opinion! If you don’t like pecans, we would recommend chopping them up pretty small. The nutty flavor is just too good to skip! If you really don’t love them though or there’s a nut allergy in the family, you can always top this dish with classic mini marshmallows.

Sweet potato casserole has always been my favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner. It’s basically dessert included in the meal, yes please! WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SWEET POTATO AND A YAM?

Fun fact, sweet potatoes are actually sweet! Whereas yams are not.

Sweet potatoes are also moister than yams.

Not to mention the outward appearance of yam is more like tree bark and the sweet potato is more of a skin appearance.

Kitchen must-haves for Instant Pot Sweet Potato Casserole:

There are also a few key tools you are going to need to perfect this make ahead instant pot sweet potato casserole:

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Small bowl
  • 9×13-inch oven safe dish
  • Potato masher or electric mixer (THIS is is the hand mixer that I like to use)
  • Trivet (this comes with the Instant Pot)
  • Instant Pot

What Instant Pot do I use?

I have the Instant Pot LUX 6 Quart 6-in-1 Programmable Pressure Cooker. It’s basically 6 appliances in 1 – pressure cooker, rice cooker, saute, steamer, cake maker, and warmer.

How to make Instant Pot Sweet Potato Casserole

Begin by scrubbing the skin of the sweet potatoes until they are completely clean. Then, once all of the sweet potatoes are clean, get out your Instant Pot.

Put the trivet into the bottom of the Instant Pot and then pour the cup of water in the bottom. After the trivet is in place, stack the sweet potatoes on top of the trivet.

Instant Pot Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe (4)

Place the lid on and make you hear it click. If it is not clicked in properly, you will not be able to start the Instant Pot.

Be sure once the lid is locked in place to turn the vale to the “seal” position. (Believe me, you don’t want to forget this step!)

Then, press the “manual” button and then set the timer for about 18 minutes. Though, if you are using a medium-sized sweet potato set the timer for 22 minutes, and 27 minutes if they are large-sized sweet potatoes.

Pro Tip: If you are wondering how long to cook your sweet potatoes for, there is a great illustration of how long different sizes should cook for HERE.

Once the sweet potatoes have finished cooking in the Instant Pot, move the valve on the lid to “venting” position to do what is called a “quick release”. This allows the pressure to leave the Instant Pot faster, rather than a natural slow release.

Wait for the steam to subside and the pressure valve to lower, then carefully remove the lid from the Instant Pot.

Next, while using an oven mitt (I like THESE) or tongs take the sweet potatoes out of the Instant Pot. Be sure to not touch the sides as they will still be VERY hot!

After removing the sweet potatoes, give them about 5 minutes to cool down as they will be VERY hot.

While you are waiting, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

After the sweet potatoes have had a chance to cool down, remove the skins from the potatoes. The skins should literally fall off when you touch them. Then place the peeled potatoes into a large mixing bowl.

Instant Pot Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe (5)

Next, get out either your electric mixer or hand masher to mash the potatoes into a smooth texture and all have been combined together.

In add in the sugar, salt, vanilla, eggs, and butter then mix them into the mashed sweet potatoes.

Instant Pot Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe (6)

Now that the potatoes are ready, get out your 9×13 pan and spray it with non-stick cooking spray.

To make the topping for the sweet potato casserole (my favorite part) mix together the brown sugar, flour, pecans, and butter in a small bowl. Then, simply sprinkle it over the top of the sweet potatoes.

Instant Pot Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe (7)

Last but not least, pop the 9×13 pan into the oven and bake it for 30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the sweet potatoes are heated all the way through.

  4. Lola R says:

I don’t understand how using the instant pot for your sweet potato casserole, is as you say, freeing up oven space, when you have to put the potatoes in the oven for 30 mins to bake?

  5. Cyd says:

Hi Erika, you could definitely prepare this the day before and have it already to stick in the oven the day of! Hope this helps and Happy Thanksgiving!!

  6. Deitra Jackson says:

I made this leaving out the pecans but keeping the brown sugar topping. I added mini marshmallows and browned them slightly. This was for my church’s Thanksgiving themed Family Community Night which is a monthly potluck! Wish I could share the pictures I took!

  7. Jenny M. says:

This recipe is incredible! I made it for Thanksgiving and everyone was raving about it! The only thing I added was to cover the top completely with mini marshmallows the last 5 minutes of cooking until they were puffy and starting to get a little golden color on the top! So good! I especially loved learning to cook the sweet potatoes in the instant pot. Truly the perfect texture!

  8. Amber Turley says:

This recipe was perfection! I couldn't believe how easy the skins came off and how easily they mashed. They were delicious and a hit!

Great recipe! I halved the recipe and used a glass 9 inch circular pan for the baking. I also substituted the sugar with erythritol. Delicious

  10. Silver Sandals says:

I crave this recipe and don’t confine it to holidays. As a senior, I no longer limit enjoyment if my favorites, as I may not be around for the next holiday! Save the IP for other dishes and nuke those sweet potatoes. Far faster, still peels easily, and no pot to wash. Time depends on the microwave power, size, and number of the sweets. Test and eat sweets more often, as they are loaded with nutrition!

We are trying this recipe this year for Thanksgiving. My mom wrote down exactly from your YouTube video and I was using the recipe listed above. The video states that we need 1/2 cup of butter. The recipe says 1/4 cup. Which is best?

  12. Momma Cyd says:

It should work out fine either way. But it's 1/4 cup butter. I think they just added 1/4 cup, but said 1/2 cup when making it. Hope it all worked out today.

  13. Marsha says:

We love this recipe! We have been making it now for 3 years faithfully every holiday season! Definitely my families favorite. I also have 8 of the cookbooks :)

FAQs

Why do you need to soak sweet potatoes before cooking? ›

Some recipes for homemade sweet potato fries ask you to soak the fries before cooking. The theory is that soaking draws out starch from inside the potatoes, helping them crisp up.

Why add eggs to sweet potato casserole? ›

The egg is the all-important binder in a sweet potato casserole: it enriches and stiffens the mixture without making it heavy. Make sure to cool the mash slightly before adding the egg so it doesn't scramble, and to stir well so there are no streaks of cooked egg white in the finished dish.

How do you keep sweet potato casserole from being runny? ›

Baking instead of boiling sweet potatoes for a casserole can help reduce the amount of moisture and avoid a runny casserole. Make sure that you bake the casserole long enough so that excess liquid evaporates as well.

What's the difference between yams and sweet potato casserole? ›

While both yams and sweet potatoes are root vegetables, the taste of each is entirely unique. The orange-fleshed sweet potatoes tend to be much sweeter and creamier in texture compared to yams which have a white flesh that's starchier and more similar to a white potato.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

Is it better to peel sweet potatoes before or after boiling? ›

There is not much difference between boiling sweet potatoes with the skins on versus peeling them, but you will get a boost of fiber and potassium if you keep the skin on. The skin also adds a subtle texture to each bite. If you're looking for a smoother mash, peel the potatoes first before boiling.

How to thicken up sweet potato casserole? ›

The casserole needs at least 15-20 minutes to cool before serving. The casserole sets up as it cools. However, if you prefer a really thick sweet potato casserole, you can add about 2-3 tablespoons of flour to your sweet potato batter and this will help the mixture to thicken.

What makes sweet potatoes taste better? ›

Dice the sweet potato, and leave the skins on. Then toss the chunks in a splash of tamari, oil, and maple syrup, and then dust heavily with chili powder, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Roast at 400 Fahrenheit for about 30-50 minutes, or until the potatoes begin to crisp up.

Why do Americans put marshmallows on sweet potato casserole? ›

According to an article from Saveur Magazine documented by the Library of Congress, the first recipe of mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows dates to 1917, when "marketers of Angelus Marshmallows hired Janet McKenzie Hill, founder of the Boston Cooking School Magazine, to develop recipes for a booklet designed to ...

How to tell when sweet potato casserole is done? ›

Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture, then pop it into the oven and let it bake for 40 to 45 minutes. You will know it's done when the topping is lightly browned and the center of your casserole is set and firm.

What is the liquid coming out of my baked sweet potato? ›

The ooze is actually referred to as "sap." It is made up of sugar and starch combined with the moisture found in the vegetable, and it escapes out of the damage made from the knife. The sap really equals the sweetness. If it's pouring out of your potato, that means it's a sweet and delicious vegetable.

Can I substitute canned yams for sweet potatoes? ›

You may not want to substitute true yams in your Candied Yams recipe since their flavor isn't the same as the sweet potatoes in the dish. They can be substituted for sweet potatoes in more savory dishes. Treat them like potatoes to make mashed yams or yam fries.

Can dogs have sweet potatoes? ›

Good news: vets give the OK when it comes to dogs and sweet potatoes! In fact, sweet potatoes are considered a healthy treat for dogs and offer lots of nutritional value for your pooch.

Which is better for weight loss, sweet potato or white potato? ›
