How We Tested and Chose the Best Baby Clothes
The Bump editorial team isn’t just a collection of pregnancy and parenting experts; we’re also moms and dads ourselves. To find the best baby clothes brands, Here’s how we narrowed down brands to help you find the best baby clothes for your little one:
- We put our staff to work, asking them to evaluate brands they’ve personally used with their families. Our expert panel for this piece included: Ashlee Neuman, content director for The Bump and mom of two, Daniel Carroll, associate director of e-commerce and dad of one, Lauren Barth, associate director of lifecycle and mom of three, Natalie Gontcharova, senior editor of lifecycle and mom of one, and Martina Garvey, e-commerce editor and aunt of two.
- We surveyed 350 members of The Bump community, asking parents about the baby clothes brands they used, asking them to rate brands based on their experience.
- We leveraged our familiarity with leading brands, combed through user reviews and considered the categories of clothing parents look for, from essentials like bodysuits and leggings to must-haves like outerwear and swimsuits.
Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read about how The Bump develops and reviews all articles, including product reviews.

What We Love
- Seasonal matching pajamas
- Super-soft organic cotton apparel
- Features like fold-down cuffs mean items fit for longer
Things To Consider
- High price point
Parents are obsessed with Hanna Andersson baby outfits and pajamas, thanks to the brand’s soft fabrics and bright, colorful patterns. But that’s not the only thing to love: Hanna Andersson is known as one of the best-quality baby clothes brands out there. “We never once threw away or recycled a piece of Hanna Andersson clothing,” said Carroll. “Everything got passed on to friends of the family once my daughter had outgrown it.” A unique combing process, which removes impurities and short fibers prone to breaking, makes their organic cotton material stronger and softer than most. So while pricey, these clothes stand the test of time and definitely pass the sibling hand-me-down test, with parents saying they used Hanna Andersson staples for multiple kids (and cousins!). Bonus: You can also snag matching family looks—perfect for holiday photos.
Size range: Baby (0-3 years); kids (2-14 years) | Materials: Cotton | Price range: $18 to $120
Our product tester says:
“In addition to being sturdy and long-lasting, these clothes are cute. My daughter had one Hanna Andersson dress, when she wore it people would stop us in the street to compliment it.”

Old Navy has an impressive selection of trendy baby clothes at prices you’re bound to swoon over. “I'm all about creature comforts when it comes to baby's daily uniform,” says Barth. “Onesies, leggings, bodysuit, matching two piece sets, zip-up PJs, rompers—and repeat.” You can snag all of these at Old Navy for a reasonable cost—and that’s before the store’s legendary sales kick in. But despite the super-low price point, you’ll still get cute newborn outfits in soft fabrics that’ll withstand the rigors of baby life. When they’re wearing these affordable baby clothes, you won’t mind too much when your kiddo smears food all over themselves. Or as Barth says, “Old Navy has the cutest options, and they're so insanely affordable, I never felt guilty simply disposing of a piece after an unreasonably messy blowout.”

Things To Consider

Honestly, Carter’s clothing fits multiple categories on this list. Organic cotton? Check. Pajamas? Check. Affordable? Check. But when it comes to essentials, the brand is hard to beat. Gontcharova’s son has been dressed in Carter’s since birth, and she says, “We have pants, sweatshirts, long-sleeved shirts, T-shirts, pajamas and more from them. Their clothes are great quality and keep the baby and toddler lifestyle in mind--everything pulls on easily, is moveable and breathable, and easy to wash.” From bodysuits and tees to sleepers and socks, you can stock up on everything your little one will live in for their first year (and beyond).

“I like how fun and tactile some of their clothes are—for example, there's a polar bear shirt where the bear's scarf is a different fuzzy texture. My son also appreciates the many types of truck and dinosaur themes they have.”
Natalie G.

Our community says:
“There’s always very cute designs at a good price.” – Kara, mom of two and The Bump survey respondent

Things To Consider
- Clothing tends to sell out quickly
H&M is one of the best baby clothes brands out there for affordable basics, but what you may not realize is that all their newborn clothing comes in preemie sizes meant to fit the littlest babies. “My daughter was born low birth weight at 37 weeks,” says Neuman, “and at 4 pounds 11 ounces, the only baby clothes that fit her were preemie outfits. H&M was a life-saver.” H&M offers adaptable basics and separates including bodysuits, leggings, rompers, cardigans, sweatshirts and even overalls for premature infants (and many are gender-neutral, another plus). Transitional preemie sets include details like extra-long cuffs that can be unfolded as baby grows, and multiple rows of snaps so the length is adjustable. These stylish baby clothes will take you from the NICU to home with your tiny one. “H&M is often where I head for budget-friendly baby clothes,” Neuman says, “but you are definitely not sacrificing quality or style. The fabrics were super-soft and washed well.”

As a brand that promises baby clothes without logos or slogans, Primary offers baby basics in a kaleidoscope of solid colors that are free from frills and ruffles that might read as gender specific. From practical puffer snowsuits you can hand down to younger siblings to sweet baby outfits that make the perfect giftable item, Primary’s collection has something for everyone. “You’ll come to find that not all onesies are made equal,” says Neuman, “but Primary’s fabrics are buttery soft, thick and durable, with snaps that’ll hold up after months of regular use.” Browse the website by color or size to build an entire wardrobe based on your kid’s favorite colors.

When it comes to stylish baby clothes for special occasions, Janie + Jack is one of the best brands around. The seasonal prints are always on-point, and the accessories are perfect for mini style icons. Neuman tells us, “They have a wide range of options for boys and girls, and the styles are far from babyish—in fact, the classic chic looks often have a mini-me vibe. Find it difficult to coordinate separates? The website has an outfit shop section to help you pull together fierce looks. And if you’re looking for something timeless, you’ve come to the right place. This brand also has a solid selection of classic kids’ looks—think sailor-inspired one-pieces for boys and smocked dresses for baby girls—that never go out of style. Baby is sure to look sharp in those holiday photos! “Janie and Jack clothes can get pricey, but the quality definitely justifies the price tag,” says Neuman.

If you want quality winter gear for your little one, but don’t savor the idea of spending a fortune, head straight to L.L.Bean. You’ll find baby snowsuits at a fraction of the price offered by other baby clothes brands, but with all the key features you’d expect from hardy outerwear, like fleecy lining and water- and stain-repellent fabrics. “When my son was 6-9 months, he wore L.L.Bean’s fuzzy winter suit all winter,” says Gontcharova, “and it was perfect to keep him comfy and shield him from the cold.” Plus, L.L.Bean has a good range of winter clothing that kids can wear when it’s cold but not necessarily arctic.

This mom-owned baby pajama brand is a real winner in our book. Made from a bamboo-viscose material, the PJs naturally regulate body temperature—”The bamboo material is silky soft and breathable,” says Garvey, “which is perfect for kids that run hot at night.” Plus, this sustainable fabric is touchably soft and gentle on sensitive skin. Little Sleepies come in a wide range of kids’ and adult sizes, but we’re particularly impressed with the baby Zippies that feature foldover cuffs and full-length double zippers for easy changing access.
Size range: Baby (0-12 months); Toddler (2-4 years) | Materials: Cotton | Price range: $16 to $96
Our product tester says:
“Little Sleepies is my go-to pajama brand for babies, kids and adults alike! I own the gray PJ bottoms and they're in constant rotation!”
Martina G.

Our community says:
“Very soft fabric, and they fit for a long time.” – Molly*, mom of one and The Bump survey respondent
“I love that their PJs are soft, but also that they fit a wide range of sizes … they build the PJs so that you can roll up the ends when it fits bigger and unroll as your child grows and you get more wear out of them.” – Meredith, mom of two and The Bump survey respondent
“They last and fit for way longer than the assigned size. They're a little pricey but I won’t have to buy another in three months.” – Hannah, mom of one and The Bump survey respondent

The colorful prints splashed across Tea Collection’s baby swimwear are almost too cute to bear. Florals, fishies, fruit—you name it, they have it. “There's nothing cuter than a baby swimsuit,” says Barth, “but cuteness isn't everything, of course. Tea Collection gives me the vibrant colors, bold patterns and sweet design touches I'm looking for, along with high-quality construction and UPF protection.” They come in a range of UV-protected styles, from bikinis and swim trunks to zippered rash guard one-pieces and everything in between, in sizes up to 4T. The brand even sells matching reversible sun hats.
